[UK] PhD Studentships -University of Manchester

Studentships are available for highly qualified applicants for 4-year PhD projects in Integrative Systems Biology at the University of Manchester, UK. These studentships are available to the applicants from the UK and abroad.

Background
Systems Biology is the new science that aims at understanding how living organisms function in health and fail in disease. The new insight is that the important properties of life arise in interactions between individuals, from individual molecules, through individual cells, through organs. The new point in history is that experimental methodology is now available to look at virtually all molecules and other components of living cells. Using modern mathematics and bioinformatics to make computer models of what happens in and with living organisms, Systems Biology seeks to understand how molecules are guided to self-organise into complex processes such as the cell cycle, reproduction, adaptation to a variety of challenges, and the formation of complex structures (www.mcisb.org)Both academia and the biotechnological and pharmaceutical industry have realised that the vast amounts of information about individual molecules offered by genomics can only be put to use and lead to understanding through Systems Biology.

Following substantial investments in the new Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre (MIB, www.mib.ac.uk), the Manchester Centre of Integrative Systems Biology (MCISB, www.mcisb.org), and the AstraZeneca Chair of Systems Biology, the University of Manchester houses a doctoral training centre for Integrated Systems Biology. Inspired by the top scientists in Systems Biology, students with a physical science/engineering/mathematics background will be teamed up with students from biological and medical backgrounds. Candidates from both backgrounds are invited to apply. They will engage in extensive training, both experimental and theoretical, in Systems Biology within the MIB and in partner groups all over the world.

Eligibility for Funding
Applicants should have an undergraduate or masters degree in the biological, medical sciences or in the physical sciences, mathematics or engineering.

Studentships are available to applicants from the UK and abroad.

Further information and Application
For further information or to apply, email in the first instance Lynne Davies: DTC@manchester.ac.uk

with “DTCapp” on the subject line, including a CV, expected or actual degree class and the names of at least 2 academic referees with their email addresses. Short-listed candidates will be asked to submit a formal application to the University.

The Centre for Design of Global Enterprise (DoGE) at the Department of Management invites applicants for a position as PhD scholar by 1 June. The position is linked to a multidisciplinary research project entitled “Made in Denmark 2050 – The role of firms in globalisation”, concerning the export success factors of Danish companies. The research project is carried out in collaboration with the GlobID research centre at the Department of Economics and is funded by The Tuborg Foundation.

The PhD student will be joining an international network of experienced researchers from Economics and International Business Studies, and is expected to partake in large scale data analysis, statistics/econometric investigations as well as in writing of academic articles and communication of research results. A successful applicant must be willing to acquire a basic knowledge of Danish during the early period of the PhD position.

The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate a strong interest and preferably prior knowledge in both applied statistics/micro-econometrics as well as in organizational design and strategy.

PhD students at Aarhus School of Business, University of Aarhus (ASB), work under almost the same terms as other research staff, i.e. they have their own office space with a computer, incl. Internet access, email, phone etc., as well as access to secretarial assistance etc. Moreover, expenses in connection with the scientific work are covered, e.g. participation in research courses and academic conferences in Denmark and abroad.

There are also good and well-paid job opportunities in Denmark for people with a PhD degree, both within and outside the university sector.

A PhD student in Denmark must complete an individually planned PhD course programme within the relevant research area and conduct a research project under the supervision of experienced senior researchers. The PhD student is also expected, as part of the programme, to spend some time (up to six months), with coverage of travel and accommodation expenses, at another – often foreign – research institution. During the programme, the PhD student is further expected to gain teaching experience within the subject area as well as experience with other forms of dissemination of research results. ASB also finances participation in relevant PhD courses and scientific conferences. In addition, it is expected that PhD students participate in and contribute to the other activities of the department.

Conditions of employment
The PhD fellowship has duration of three years. Graduates and students expecting to complete their study programme in the near future may apply for the fellowship. The employment is covered by a national collective agreement.

The applicant’s research potential will be the determining factor for a positive academic assessment. Exam results will also be assessed. For further information on admission criteria and ASB’s PhD programme, please go to: http://www.asb.dk/research/phd.aspx.

If you have any questions about the fellowship etc., please feel free to contact Henrik Scriver, deputy head, tel. +45 8948 6560, email: hsc@asb.dk.

  • Other material, if any (e.g. publications), which should be taken into account in the assessment

Questions about the preparation of the project description may be directed to Professor Poul Houman Andersen, Aarhus School of Business, tel. +45 8948 6630, e-mail: poa@asb.dk.

The application and attachments must be submitted by e-mail to PhD@asb.dk or in sets (without binding) in five copies by ordinary mail to Aarhus School of Business, Aarhus University, Management Office, Fuglesangs Allé 4, 8210 Aarhus V, Denmark, Attn.: Inger Steensgaard.

Monday 1 June 2009 at 12:00 noon. The applications will subsequently be assessed by an expert assessment committee, and applicants will receive the committee’s assessment of the individual application and the response to the application from ASB approx. one month after the expiry of the deadline for application.

The assessment of the application comprises an overall assessment of the applicant and his or her qualifications. Particular weight is attached to the project proposal, the grades obtained by the applicant in the study programme, and to whether the applicant, during the study programme or in another manner, has displayed special skills in writing major papers, e.g. a thesis.

[Australia] PhD Scholarships in Biomaterials for Cochlear Implants - The University of Queensland

2 PhD Scholarships in Biomaterials for Cochlear Implants
PhD Scholarships in Biomaterials – Next Generation Insulation for Cochlear Implants

Currently, soft silicone materials are employed as insulation for implantable Cochlear electrode arrays. However these materials have limited tensile properties and tear resistance, thereby significantly hampering the scope for new and more complex electrode array designs. The central aim of this project is to explore new insulation materials with similar flexibility, biocompatibility, biostability and electrical insulation to silicone, but with far superior tensile and tear strength.

This will be achieved through the development of biomedical polyurethane nanocomposites via a collaboratively- conceived and executed project featuring significant cooperation between researchers at UQ, Cochlear Ltd (Sydney) and Aortech Biomaterials (Melbourne).

  • PhD 1 will have a strong polymer synthesis and processing focus, involving the preparation of nanocomposites by various processing methods and understanding structure-property relationships.
  • PhD 2 will be more concerned with biostability and biological interactions of the novel materials and their various components.

The project team (and supervisors) includes: A/Prof Darren Martin, Prof Rod Minchin and Prof Peter Halley from The University of Queensland; Dr Martin Svehla from Cochlear Ltd and Dr Ajay Padsalgikar from Aortech Biomaterials Pty Ltd. This project is funded by Cochlear, Aortech and the NHMRC.

Requirements: B.Eng., B.Sc. or Masters Degree in Materials or Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biology or Biomedical Engineering.
Remuneration: Stipend – APA equivalent (tax-free and indexed) for 3 yrs.

Deadline: open
