PhD position in Computer Graphics and Visualization
Project topic: Non-Photorealistic Rendering and Animation for Illustration
Description of research:
Non-photorealistic rendering and animation (NPAR) is now an established domain within computer graphics. Many techniques have been developed to simulate traditional or novel media. The goal of this project is to do research in the area of illustrative rendering using NPAR methods and techniques, taking into account recent studies that compared hand-made illustrations with current computer-generated imagery. It may address specific problems such as high-quality rendering, material portrayal, NPAR modeling, interaction with the generated tools, etc. The topic can also be adjusted and/or specified to fit the specific background, expertise, and interests of the PhD student. The page http://www.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/~isenberg/projects/ gives more information on this research topic.
Organization:
This research will be carried out in the Scientific Visualization and Computer Graphics research group of the Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Groningen.
Requirements:
- The PhD candidate should hold a MSc degree in Computer Science or an equivalent degree and have a strong interest in computer graphics, non-photorealistic rendering, and/or interaction.
- You are expected to have an excellent academic record (as shown by a list of examination marks and possibly scientific publications) and be curious, creative, and ambitious.
- You should be able and motivated to work in a team of scientists and have good communicative and social skills and also be able to communicate well in English.
- You should be able to write scientific articles and reports (proven by your MSc thesis or scientific publications) in English.
Conditions of employment:
The University of Groningen offers foreign (i.e., non-Dutch) citizens a fellowship of the University of Groningen for a period of four years in which period the Ph.D. thesis has to be completed. The fellowship currently amounts to 1370 Euro per month and will be adjusted to general price changes once a year.
The objective of the 4 year PhD position is a suite of research articles and papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals or well-respected peer-reviewed conferences, together comprising the PhD thesis leading to the granting of the PhD degree (Dr.) at the University of Groningen. After the first year, there is an evaluation for feasibility of successful completion of the PhD thesis within the following 3 years. A training program is part of the agreement. You and your supervisor(s) will make up a plan for the additional education and supervising that you specifically need.
