University of York Teaching PhD Scholarship - MPhil/PhD Programme in Health Sciences, Department of Health Sciences University of York
In the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise we were rated top nationally for nursing research. We achieved a 5 in Community Clinical Subjects and a 5 in Nursing.
Our aim is to develop the contribution of scientific evidence in health and health care through high quality research, effective dissemination and implementation. Our research is characterised by: interdisciplinary and international collaboration, a robust scientific foundation and relevance and impact for policy and practice. Researchers in the department collaborate closely with the large, multidisciplinary confederation of university departments and research centres involved in health related research, including the Hull York Medical School (HYMS), the Centre for Health Economics and the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination.
This teaching scholarship is an opportunity to gain valuable teaching experience and career development and carry out doctoral research in health inequalities (relating to illness behaviour or participation in research). It offers tuition fees at the UK rate, a stipend for 3.5 years and a defined teaching role and training programme.
Applicants should have, or expect to have, a first or upper second class honours degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. sociology, psychology, health studies, geography).

Overview
The MPhil/PhD in Health Sciences is an opportunity to develop your research interests and skills in a centre of excellence for health, within research groups building the international evidence base for health and health care. The programmes are three years full-time or six years part-time for a PhD, and two years full-time or four years part-time for an MPhil. They are designed to develop your academic excellence in a multidisciplinary context. We will equip you to undertake, analyse and evaluate health research. At the same time you have the flexibility to tailor your studies to pursue your own research interests and develop the skills you need for your future career. We support a range of different methodological and disciplinary perspectives. The common theme is the rigour of the methodology and the aim of adding to the evidence base for health and health care.
We ask you to provide a brief research outline with your application and give some indication of the research group within which your research interest belongs.
Research training
All students are initially registered for the MPhil degree. Upgrading to PhD registration requires successful completion of training in research skills and demonstrated progress in independent research. Research skills training will generally take place in the first six months for full-time students and over two years for part‑time students
All MPhil/PhD students are required to demonstrate competency in the following areas, normally by taking these modules:
Research Methods
- Applied Biostatistics
- Epidemiology
- Systematic Reviews
Further training, generally equivalent to at least a further 40 credits, will be agreed with your academic supervisor and programme leader. Most of our MPhil and PhD students follow the multidisciplinary approach of the MSc in Health Sciences (Health Services Research)programme, and some students treat the first year as a research training opportunity, following the MSc programme before upgrading to MPhil/PhD.
The University offers a variety of further opportunities for the training and personal development of research students, enabling you to make the most of your university experience. Workshops include communication skills, career management and training for postgraduate students who teach. Other learning programmes provide opportunities to enhance skills and develop new interests.
Research supervision
You will receive academic support from a supervisor and Research Advisory Group. Supervisors are matched to students by research interests and expertise.
Preference in admission will be given to students whose proposed research fits within the research themes of the Department and the research programmes of the academic staff.
You should be sure to name a potential supervisor on your application form. For details of academic staff and research interests, as well as research teams and leaders, see Research in the Department , the Department’s Research Staff List, and Research Links with other Departments.
Facilities
Research students are provided with excellent facilities as a base for their study at York.
