Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine & Science seeks a ‘hands-on’ macromolecular crystallographer who values being helpful and a ‘hard-money’ academic position.
Job Requirements: A self-starter with good computer and people skills and post-doctoral experience in macromolecular crystallography, and X-ray hardware maintenance. Experience with MAD/SIRAS and MR structure determination, protein purification and crystallization, or extensive computer skills is a plus. Experience with membrane protein purification/crystallization is an additional plus.
Primary Duties/Responsibilities: This is a service position. The X-ray Laboratory Manager must be able to act independently within the framework of the goals and priorities of the Rosalind Franklin Structural Biology Laboratory X-ray Diffraction Facility. Duties include maintaining a user friendly data collection environment:
- Maintaining and operating a Rigaku RU-H X-ray generator, Bruker CCD and Rigaku R-axis IV++ X-ray detectors, Oxford and XSTREAM cryogenic systems, and a TTP LabTech Mosquito crystallization robot.
- Interfacing with vendors and service technicians during periods of instrumentation failure; attending and facilitating data collection during regularly scheduled University supported trips to the APS.
- Maintaining a user friendly operating computing environment.
- Installing and incorporating new computing hardware and peripherals into the computing environment.
- Seeking out projects within the biochemistry department and throughout the university that are amenable to crystallographic analysis.
- Assisting users and potential users in all phases of structure determination and analysis in either a service or teaching capacity, including: protein crystallization, data collection, and structural analysis.
- Acting in an advisory role in the purchase of new crystallographic instrumentation, and new computing hardware and software as opportunities present themselves.
Job training courses and/or attendance in scientific meetings in X-ray methods, X-ray maintenance, computer system administration, or protein crystallization/robotics will be made available to keep the X-ray Laboratory Managers skills up to date.
